Menningarmiðstöð Fljótsdalshéraðs (MMF), the municipality center for culture, is located in Sláturhúsið, the old slaughterhouse in Egilsstaðir, which also houses VegaHÚSIÐ a culture and community center for young people aged 16-25.

The role of these centers is to arrange and contribute to the promotion of art and culture in Fljótsdalshérað, supply facilities for events, such as concerts, theater productions and art shows as well as workshops for local and visiting artists.

For young people aged 15 and younger there is also a seperate community center called NýUng. It is located right next to the compulsory school in Egilsstaðir and offers various organized activy.

Museum, library and archives

Safnahúsið in Egilsstaðir is a building that houses three institutions vital to the cultural heritage of the area.

The East Iceland Heritage Museum preserves the history of East Iceland by collecting and preserving things that reflect the society, culture and everyday life of people in the area, from past to present day. The museum has two permanent exhibitions, one about reindeer in East Iceland and one about the old rural households in the region. The museum also offers diverse temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

The East Iceland Archives conserves and stores documents and books from the municipalities, officials and associations in East Iceland as well as a great number of private documents donated or collected in the area. There is also a library within the archives that emphasises scholarly work and publications from the area, including newspapers. There is also a collection of photographs from East Iceland.
